Miss Ren Imai

I took on the post of summit moderator because I realized that this would be a great opportunity for me to interact with people around the world and to use English.

As I attended the preparatory conference in Tokyo and had meetings with many people including the Prime Minister, I  begun to realize the importance of my position and the significance of the Summit. I also attended a presentation workshop held for high school students in Kochi Prefecture. After the workshop, I felt that I needed to familiarize myself more with various disaster prevention measures against tsunamis and earthquakes.

I went into the Summit with the intention of listening carefully to the opinions and ideas from the participants and hoped to deepen my knowledge on the danger of tsunamis and disaster prevention measures against them. Although I became really nervous when I sat down on my moderator seat looking out at everyone, I was glad that I kept going and managed to do my role without any difficulties.

Since the Summit, my family and I talk about and discuss tsunami and disaster prevention measures more often than we did before. I witnessed many enthusiastic exchanges of opinions and ideas between high school students from different countries in English during the Summit. The experience has inspired me to improve my English communication skill and to work towards a career that uses English in the future. If a tsunami attacks Kuroshio Town in the future, I hope that students like myself can take the lead in minimizing the damage by cooperating with the local residents.

Miss Rinka Imamura

When they asked me to be the moderator for the Summit, I was unsure about whether to accept the position or not, as I was not confident about my English and public speaking skills. However I decided to take on the role despite feeling uneasy about it.

After attending the preparatory conference in Tokyo and meeting with the Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Chief Secretary Mr. Nikai, I realized the amount of effort and thought that so many people had been putting into this Summit. In addition, I attended a declaration review meeting and a workshop held for high school students in Kochi prior to the Summit as the moderator. Attending these meetings and workshops made me feel more nervous but also reminded me once again about the thoughts and effort behind the Summit. These experiences helped encourage me to do my best as one of the Summit moderators.

I went into the Summit thinking that this would be a great opportunity to raise awareness of disaster prevention measures and to pass on not only the danger of nature, but also the beauty of it. Even though I was nervous, I enjoyed my time at the Summit. Moreover, I got to meet people from all over the world and learn about their diverse cultures.

I feel that my outlook and perspectives were widened through taking part in the Summit, as I was able to meet many people from different countries and hear a range of opinions and ideas. I will always remember this amazing experience.
